Richmond

A south-west London town that is suburban, west-southwest of Charing Cross by (13.2 km) 8.2 miles is Richmond. Formerly part of the Kingston upon Thames parish that is ancient in the Surrey county was Richmond. Now part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and has a population of 21,469 (consisting of North Richmond and South Richmond wards) is Richmond.

Often used to refer to the Richmond town incorrectly is the name Richmond upon Thames: in fact, the suffix, in reference to the Borough in London, should properly be used only, unlike Kingston upon Thames that is nearby. The parish of Richmond St Mary Magdalene, split off from a time that was early from Kingston upon Thames, formed the Municipal Borough of Richmond from 1890. Richmond Green, which in shape is roughly square and with the Little Green together, a small green that is supplementary stretching from its southeast corner, and is 12 acres (0.05 km²) in size, sits at the heart of the town.

Forms part of the Thames Landscape Strategy which aims to protect and enhance this section of the river corridor into London is the view from Richmond Hill now. Opposite the former Home of Royal Star and Garter, sits at the top of Richmond Hill, the Richmond Park's Richmond Gate entrance. On the Petersham Road at the bottom of Richmond Hill is Ham Polo Club.

Located here is the Richmond University - a private institution also known as Richmond, the American International University in London. In 1971, the German School London opened in nearby Petersham, continuing the Richmond popularity in London for families settling that are German. On its return via Kingston upon Thames to the terminus at central London, one service calls at Richmond station.

With a number that is large of open spaces and parks including many conservation areas that are protected, and Richmond Park, which much of Richmond Hill include, it is on a meander of the River Thames. Built as a hunting lodge for George II was White Lodge in the middle of what is now Richmond Park, and during this period significantly increased are, in their own grounds, the number of houses that are large - such as Pembroke Lodge and Asgill House. Installed at Whittaker Avenue's end in the 1920s between the Riverside and the Old Town Hall was the Richmond War Memorial, which now commemorates wars.

Now serviced with daily boats sailing between Hampton Court Palace and Westminster Pier by the London River Services is Richmond. Has displays relating to Ham, Richmond, Kew and Petersham's history, is the Richmond Museum, close to Richmond Bridge, in Richmond's Old Town Hall. Also provides open areas for recreation, rugby, other pitches, and football, is the park nearby; in addition, there is, address to London Scottish rugby clubs and Richmond F.C., the Athletic Ground at Richmond.
